The hymn “For All the Saints” was written by William W. How, and later put to music. While it’s definitely a lesser-known song, the words and accompanying tune are beautiful and uplifting.
As you’ll see in a moment, the lyrics to this song are about the unity of the body of Christ. It talks about the struggle of the battle we fight here on Earth, and the peace and safety we have to look forward to in Heaven.
While the family of God is made up of people from different backgrounds, cultures, and even time periods, we all have one thing in common—our faith in Christ. We are all serving and relying on the same God, and we will all one day gather around His throne and worship Him together.
The hymn “For All the Saints” is a very encouraging song that reminds us of the fellowship we have with other believers—without taking the focus off of Christ Himself.
You can read the lyrics to this song below, and the tune is available to listen to here.
For All the Saints
For all the saints who from their labors rest,
Who Thee by faith before the world confessed;
Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
Oh, may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold,
— Fight as the Saints who nobly fought of old,
And win with them the victor’s crown of gold.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress, and their Might;
Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well-fought fight;
Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
O blest communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,
Steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
And hearts are brave again, and arms are strong.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
But then there breaks a still more glorious day:
The saints triumphant rise in bright array;
The King of glory passes on His way.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast,
Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
In praise of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Alleluia, Alleluia!
