10 Obscure Christmas Hymns

As I sat down to write this post, I knew I wanted to write about a Christmas hymn. But the fact is, there are just too many of them to choose from. So, I decided to provide a list of some obscure Christmas hymns, and I also want to give you all an opportunity to list some of your favorite Christmas hymns—whether well-known or not.

Christmas is the time of year when we focus on the birth of Christ. However, it would be impossible to confine our celebration just to the incarnation. As Jesus told Pilate, “To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth.”

While we do rejoice in the miracle of Christ’s birth, and the marvel that God Himself became a man, we also recognize that Jesus did not come just to be born. He came to sacrifice His life for our sins. This is mentioned over and over again in the scriptures, from the men who prophesied of Jesus’ birth, to those who saw and worshiped him.

Knowing this, we can see how any good Christmas hymn would extend beyond the story of Christ’s birth and tell of His purpose to redeem all mankind. We often get caught up singing the same hymns (and not just around Christmastime), so it’s good to be introduced to some new ones that might offer a unique perspective on the subject.

So without further ado, here are ten Christmas hymns you might not have heard of before:

  1. Who is He in Yonder Stall?
  2. Once, in Royal David’s City
  3. O Come, Little Children
  4. Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne
  5. The Word Was Made Flesh
  6. How Great Our Joy!
  7. While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night
  8. Infant Holy, Infant Lowly
  9. Ring the Bells!
  10. The Birthday of a King

And that is all I have for today except to say that there will be some more exciting Christmas-themed posts coming soon, so stay tuned!
